Please be sure to congratulate all of the winter athletes and their success this season. They worked all season to accomplish records that will go down in Boone’s history.
The boys soccer team capped a tremendous season with an appearance in the state championship game for the first time since the 1980 squad accomplished that feat. The Braves fell 2-0 to an undefeated Boca Raton team in the final, but gave the Bobcats all that they could handle in an intense contest. Along the way, Boone won District and Regional Championships and was nationally ranked by the end of the season. They finished the year with 17 wins, and earned the top spot in the final 2019-20 Sentinel
Super-Six rankings. Senior Trevor Firkel was named to the 1st Team All-Metro squad.
The girls soccer team won the District title this year but fell to Lake Mary in the Regional Quarter-Finals. Heidi Wicks, Addison Marlett, Emma Leathers, Lexi Morton and McKenzie Giles earned 1st Team All-Metro honors for the Lady Braves. The team finished 8th in the final Orlando Sentinel soccer rankings. Emma Leathers was also named as the Academic Award winner for highest weighted GPA in the East Conference.
The boys basketball team fell to eventual District Champion Lake Nona in the district playoffs, but placed juniors Javion Phelps and Will Searl on the 6-member 1st Team All-Metro squad. They won the last boys basketball game ever played in the Wayne Rickman Gymnasium, defeating rival Edgewater H.S. in the finale. The team finished 17th in the Orlando Sentinel’s final boys basketball rankings, which in Central Florida with all of its talent both in the private and public schools, is still an accomplishment.
The girls basketball team had a historic regular season and an amazing playoff run that ended in the State Regional Final against eventual state runner-up Plant H.S. The Lady Braves won the district championship and finished the year with 20 wins. They finished 9th in the final Orlando Sentinel basketball rankings, which consist of area programs throughout Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and southwest Volusia counties.
In wrestling, the boys squad finished 2nd at the District Championships as a team and Daniel Kelley took home a district title at the 285-weight class. Runner-ups were Joseph Lyttle, Kris Tellez, Kevin Ortiz, Colbi Giroux, Jackson Brocket and Miles Tankovich.
At the Regional Tournament, Lyttle (runner-up), Giroux (3rd place) and Brocket (4th place) all qualified for the State Championships. Giroux also took home a Metro Championship in the 160-weight class.
The competitive cheer team finished 4th in the State Championships and finished as runner-up in the Metro Conference Championships. Emma Thomas was named 1st Team All-Metro and Gabi Fatigati took home the Academic Award for the highest weighted GPA in the East Conference.
The girls weightlifting team placed 4th overall in the Metro Conference Championships and sophomore Vivian Cols earned an individual Metro Conference title and just missed qualifying for the State Championships.
The Winter FHSAA Academic Team Champions were announced and after the Fall and Winter seasons, Boone currently sits as 10th overall in the state in the 7A classification. Each team must have a cumulative average unweighted GPA of 3.0 or better to qualify for the awards. The girls soccer team placed 3rd overall in their sport in 7A, with a combined GPA average of 3.733.
